Parents are encouraged to take their child to the dentist by their child’s first birthday. There are other signs that indicate a need to see a kid-friendly dentist, as well. This review discusses when to see a kid-friendly dentist, which helps ensure that children are able to receive the care they need to maintain a healthy smile.
Signs your child should see a kid-friendly dentist
Much like adults, children should see their dentist for regular check-ups and routine dental cleanings. Parents should also take them into the office if they experience dental pain, show signs of weakened enamel, or experience periodontal concerns. Many kid-friendly dentists also encourage treating orthodontic issues at a young age as well.
By your child’s first birthday
Children should have their first dentist visit within six months of the eruption of their first primary tooth. This is typically before their first birthday. Parents whose child has reached their first birthday and not yet visited the dentist should do so. During the very first visit, the kid-friendly dentist will conduct an oral examination and order dental X-rays to see the development of the child’s teeth. They also use this as an opportunity to educate parents on helping their toddlers through the teething and initial oral care stages.
Dental pain
Dental pain is never a good sign. This can include a toothache, teeth sensitivity, or pain in the gums. Pain can also be the result of dental trauma. Regardless of the cause, all instances of dental pain should be dealt with promptly. A kid-friendly dentist can assess the underlying cause of the pain to determine if treatment is necessary and manage the discomforting symptoms.
Teeth become discolored, stained, or spotted
Teeth discoloration is a sign of issues with your child’s enamel. This includes weakened enamel and dental cavities, which result when the enamel officially erodes. Enamel does not grow back after it is gone, so it is important to strengthen it with fluoride treatment once it weakens. Dental cavities can be treated through dental fillings.
Periodontal concerns
Swollen or bleeding gums are a sign of periodontal (gum) disease. It is important not to ignore periodontal concerns as they can have a significant long-term impact if left untreated for an extended amount of time. Treatment for periodontal concerns may include deep dental cleaning and improvements in the child’s oral care routine.
Orthodontic concerns (misalignments)
Many kid-friendly dentists offer early orthodontic services to prevent and correct jaw and teeth misalignments. Children that show signs of misalignments can benefit from an orthodontic consultation to find out which treatment options are available. Early orthodontic treatment can help prevent concerns from developing.
